President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi is inaugurating 11 power plants and transformers costing USD 9bn with total capacities of 15.3 thousand MW, which would make them the largest in Africa and the Middle East.
Ministry of Electricity’s Spokesman Ayman Hamza told Al Mal newspaper that the production of inaugurated projects accounts for 50% of total power production in the country throughout its history. It also represents 8 -fold the High Dam’s power output.
The projects would transform Egypt into a regional power hub, he added.
Hamza explained that by inaugurating these power projects, Egypt’s power production will rise to 47,000 MW, exceeding local needs by 16,000 MW.
He pointed out that the new projects include 3 large power plants built by the German Siemens at a cost of USD 7bn, with a capacity of 4800 MW per each. The power plants are the biggest in the Middle East and Africa.
The spokesperson said that al-Sisi is to inaugurate a wind power plant costing USD 220mn, with a total capacity of 220 MW, adding that the project has been carried out by a Spanish company, and has been financed by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
