By Ahmed Ashour and Mahmoud Mohsen:
The ministry of transport has decided to announce the details of a tender to supply 1300 railcars to railway authority next week, according to statements by minister of transport Hesham Arafat yesterday.
A Chinese alliance and a Russian-Ukrainian consortium are competing for supplying the rail vehicles.
The ministry of transport wants to minimize the project’s cost of financing, freight rates and maintenance services.
Arafat said that his tour to Germany and Belgium with the minister of military production Mohamed El Asaar to discuss partnership in manufacturing train carriages was very positive, adding that Canada’s Bombardier selected factories affiliated to the ministry of military production to start manufacturing trains in the Middle East.
Collaboration between the ministries of military production and transport achieved good results, according to Arafat, who added that the ministry of military production implemented works worth EGP 1.2bn in north western arcs of the regional ring road project.
